Tragedy

December 14, 2012

I am beyond saddened and horrified about the shooting in Connecticut today and in Oregon earlier this week. My prayers go out to every parent, grandparent, sister, brother, aunt, uncle, friend and neighbor of those whose lives were so violently and senselessly ended.

These tragedies underscore why Unhooked Books exists. My goal in starting this bookstore was and is to provide help to everyone suffering with mental illness — those afflicted by it and those impacted by the afflicted. We can’t pretend it doesn’t exist. We can’t be ashamed when someone in our family has a disorder. We can’t be ashamed when we have a disorder. Our created being is physical and mental. Both need equal attention and respect.

We must pay as much attention to mental illness as we do to breast cancer.

Reply if you agree with these statements and please forward this to your groups!

We will no longer ignore mental illness.

We will no longer judge mental illness.

We will eliminate the stigma of mental illness.

We will seek help for ourselves and our families and friends who suffer from mental illness.

We will support legislation for increased funding for mental health services.

We will intervene when we see unusual behaviors so we can act before tragedies occur.

We will take time to understand mental illness and do our part to provide a respectful, validating environment for everyone.

We will pay as much attention to our children’s mental health as we do their physical health.

Please support mental health organizations. Here are my two favorites:
Personality Disorder Awareness Network
NAMI

Again, our prayers and thoughts go to everyone affected by this tragedy.
